107 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
²Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has redeemed from trouble
³and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

⁴Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
⁵hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
⁶Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
⁷He led them by a straight way
    till they reached a city to dwell in.
⁸Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
⁹For he satisfies the longing soul,
    and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

¹⁰Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    prisoners in affliction and in irons,
¹¹for they had rebelled against the words of God,
    and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
¹²So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, with none to help.
¹³Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
¹⁴He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
    and burst their bonds apart.
¹⁵Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
¹⁶For he shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.

¹⁷Some were fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
¹⁸they loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.
¹⁹Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
²⁰He sent out his word and healed them,
    and delivered them from their destruction.
²¹Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
²²And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

²³Some went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the great waters;
²⁴they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
²⁵For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.
²⁶They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage melted away in their evil plight;
²⁷they reeled and staggered like drunken men
    and were at their wits' end.
²⁸Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
²⁹He made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.
³⁰Then they were glad that the waters were quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
³¹Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
³²Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

³³He turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,
³⁴a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the evil of its inhabitants.
³⁵He turns a desert into pools of water,
    a parched land into springs of water.
³⁶And there he lets the hungry dwell,
    and they establish a city to live in;
³⁷they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.
³⁸By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their livestock diminish.

³⁹When they are diminished and brought low
    through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
⁴⁰he pours contempt on princes
    and makes them wander in trackless wastes;
⁴¹but he raises up the needy out of affliction
    and makes their families like flocks.
⁴²The upright see it and are glad,
    and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

⁴³Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

¹⁸Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. ¹⁹And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. ²⁰But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ²¹She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” ²²All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

²³“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”

(which means, God with us). ²⁴When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, ²⁵but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

The New Covenant
31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper
14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?
24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
